Ayurvedic Management of Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common painful condition that can impact your everyday life. When you have endometriosis, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in wrong places within your abdomen and pelvic area.

EndometriosisEndometriosis can cause painful and heavy periods, as well as fertility issues.

A few places you can develop endometriosis include the:

  • Outside and back of your uterus.
  • Fallopian tubes.
  • Peritoneum (the lining of your abdomen and pelvis).
  • Bladder and ureters.
  • Diaphragm (a muscle near the bottom of your chest that plays an important role in breathing).

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Very painful menstrual cramps.
  • Abdominal pain or back pain during your period or in between periods.
  • Pain during or after sexual intercourse.
  • Painful bowel movements.
  • Pain during defecation and micturition
  • Heavy bleeding during periods or spotting (light bleeding) between periods.
  • Infertility (difficulty becoming pregnant).
  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Diarrhoea or constipation during menstrual period.
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Nausea or Bloating

CAUSES

Endometriosis is a complex disease that affects many women globally from the onset of their first period (menarche) through menopause, regardless of ethnic origin or social status. Many different factors are thought to contribute to its development.

  • Retrograde menstruation or Reverse menstruation (menstrual blood flows back during periods).
  • Transformation (Other cells in the body may become endometrial cells and start growing outside the endometrium).
  • Surgical scar complication (Endometrial cells may attach to scar tissue from a cut made during surgery to the stomach area, such as a C-section).
  • Genetics

  • Never giving birth.
  • Starting your period at an early age.
  • Going through menopause at an older age.
  • Short menstrual cycles — for instance, less than 27 days.
  • Heavy menstrual periods that last longer than seven days.
  • Having higher levels of estrogen in your body or a greater lifetime exposure to estrogen your body produces.
  • Low body mass index.
  • One or more relatives with endometriosis, such as a mother, aunt or sister.
  • Defects in your uterus or fallopian tubes.

COMPLICATIONS

  • Pelvic infection.
  • Pelvic or uterine abscesses (a collection of pus).
  • Chronic pain.
  • Ovarian cysts.
  • Preterm delivery.
  • Malignancy (Rare).
