Vitiligo Diet And Habits

Vitiligo is mainly an autoimmune problem and for its treatment Ayurveda is considered best as it works on strengthening the disturbed immune system of the body. A proper immune system helps in treatment & prevention of Vitiligo.

Food To Be Restricted

  • Citrus fruits such as oranges, items made of Citrus fruits, juices, lemon, curd, Raw Tomato, Raw garlic, Raw Onion, Tamarind, Brinjal, Pickles, Papaya, Grapes, Green chili, Pomegranate must be strictly restricted.
  • Fish, Red Meat is also restricted. Much spicy and oily food intake should be reduced. In non-vegetarian food only, chicken is allowed once weekly in cases where there is mild spreading of Vitiligo.
  • Milk product intake should be cut down. One should completely avoid medicines containing Gooseberry (“Amla” – as it’s very rich in Vitamin C). Any edible item which has soda bi carb should not be taken.
  • Other items which are sour in taste, tinned food or drinks, junk food, fermented food, chocolates, coffee, or cocoa made items should not be taken regularly.

Food To Be Taken

  • Vitiligo patients must include green leafy vegetables and fruits to their regular diet.
  • Fruits like apple, bananas are very helpful in treating white spots.
  • Figs, dates, chickpea, spinach, cabbage, apricot, beetroot, carrot etc are considered good for repigmentation. Regular consumption of these foods may slow down the spread of white patches and gradually the repigmentation process will begin.
  • Vitamin supplements are also very helpful in treating vitiligo. Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin E supplements are usually recommended.
  • Copper glassful water helps in pigment deposition over skin. It is helpful and should be taken daily at least one glassful.
  • Figs & Dates are copper rich and are helpful in pigmentation so these are recommended in Vitiligo
